Indonesia-UK Extends Energy Transition Program to 2027

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia through its Ministry for Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) extended the Indonesia-UK cooperation program MENTARI (Toward Indonesia’s Low-Carbon Energy Transition) until 2027. The extension agreement was inked by ESDM Minister Arifin Tasrif and Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero Graham Stuart.

Arifin said that the UK supports Indonesia’s step towards Net Zero Emission (NZE) through this program. Initially, the cooperation program would be completed by 2024. “We extend (MENTARI) to 2027 and the UK will add £6.5 million more [into the project],” said Arifin on Friday, August 4, 2023.

Arifin explained that MENTARI is the ministry’s main partnership to accelerate the preparation of renewable energy procurement in an on-grid and off-grid application, prioritizing policy, recommendation, and technical examination. In addition to MENTARI, the UK also supports Indonesia’s energy transition through other programs, namely the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO).

Arifin added that Indonesia will look for more partnership potential to support its energy transition, considering the need for a US$1 trillion investment by 2060. The increase in funding is caused by Indonesia’s plan to halt its coal plants early.

Meanwhile, Graham Struat said that Indonesia has great potential to take a central role in renewable energy development in Southeast Asia. MENTARI, he said, is intended to help Indonesia realize its renewable energy potential. “With the help and investment from the UK, Indonesia will accelerate its transition from coal to clean electricity, and work hard to reach net zero by 2060 or sooner,” said Stuart.
